AS/A LEVEL APPLIED HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

WHAT IS HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE?

This course covers a range of topics that are relevant to many professions where an understanding of individual needs is essential along with the skills and techniques required to meet them.

WHY SHOULD I STUDY HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE?

You should consider studying Health and Social Care if you have a genuine interest in people of all ages and social backgrounds and you want to learn how to ensure they have a good a quality of life.

USEFUL SKILLS & INTERESTS

To be successful on the course you will need:

  • a high level of commitment as the course is very demanding
  • be willing to embrace a flexible approach to their own learning
  • wish to develop the special strengths and qualities needed for work in the care sectors

COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT

Within the Health & Social Care Course there are a number of options to consider:

 

OPTION 1:

Year 1 AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Health & Social Care – Single Award: One year

AS Unit 1:

Effective Caring

AS Unit 2:

Effective Communication

AS Unit 3:

Health, Illness and Disease

 

Upon successful completion of the first year there is the opportunity to progress to the second year of the course to complete the full A’ level qualification which is graded A – E.

 

Year Two Advanced Level Health & Social Care – Single Award

A2 Unit 11:

Working in Health & Social Care

A2 Unit 12:

Factors & Theories of Human Development

A2 Unit 19:

Physiological Aspects of Health / Early Years Education

 

OPTION 2

AS (Advanced Subsidiary) Health & Social Care – Double Award One Year

AS Unit 1:

Effective Caring

AS Unit 2:

Effective Communication

AS Unit 3:

Health, Illness and Disease

AS Unit 4:

Child Development

AS Unit 7:

Needs & Provision for Elderly clients

AS Unit 9:

Nutrition and Dietetics

 

Upon successful completion of the first year of the course you will have the chance to progress to the second year and to gain the equivalent of two A’ levels graded AA – EE.

 

Year Two Advanced Level Health & Social Care – Double Award

Working in Health & Social Care (Synoptic)

A2 Unit 12:

Factors & Theories of Human Development

A2 Unit 15:

Clients with Disabilities

A2 Unit 17:

Understanding Mental Disorder

A2 Unit 16:

Physiological Aspects of Health

 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment is predominantly through coursework, marked by tutors and moderated by the examining board. Exams will take place in January and June and will be graded A to E.

COURSE COMMITMENT

You must be committed to studying independently. You will need to carry out research into different topics and present your research in a way that is required by the examination board. You will be expected to present some of your findings to your peers.

COURSE COSTS

Workbooks will be available to support your learning at a cost of £3.50 each (optional). There are occasional visits and/or trips which may incur small costs – again these are optional.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

These are Advanced level courses and to enrol you will need to have a minimum of five GCSE passes at Grade C or above – preferably to include English.

PROGRESSION ROUTES

There are numerous opportunities in Further or Higher Education. Pursuing careers in areas such as Nursing & Midwifery, a wide range of medically-related careers, Social Work and Probation Service, Nutrition, Mental Health,, Armed Forces, Police, Primary School Teaching and Early Years Care.
