BTEC National Award in Applied Law
What is Law?
Law is the practice of enforcing social control by regulating people’s behaviour. It is about rules, regulations and laws passed by the British Parliament and the European Union. We divide Law into the Criminal Code which deals with topic such as murder and theft and the Civil Code which deals with issues such as disputes between neighbours and personal injury claims.
Why should I take a BTEC National Award in Applied Law?
BTEC qualifications are highly regarded by both universities and employers. This programme of study will provide you with an insight into the world of legal work and would help prepare you for a career in the Police Force, Local Government, Business and areas of legal practice. It would provide a basis for future professional qualifications and a rewarding career.

Course Structure
The course is made up of the following six units:
- Dispute Solving in the Legal System
- Understanding Law Making
- Aspects of Legal Liability
- Unlawful Homicide and Police Powers
- Aspects of Property Offences and Police Powers
- Aspects of the Law of Tort
How will it be assessed?
You will be required to submit portfolio work on a regular basis for each unit of the course. You may be asked to submit mini assignments in preparation for your final submission. You will be given advice and guidance on how maximise your portfolio of work and develop your understanding.
Course Commitment
You will have about 4.5 hours of contact time with the teacher, together with a commitment to attend learning workshops, and you are expected to study for the same amount of time on your own.
Entrance requirements
You do not need to have studied Law before but Prior Pursglove College asks that applicants have 5 GCSEs at grade C or above to start this course.
Progression routes
Law can be a challenging and highly rewarding career. You may wish to apply for a range of occupations related to Law and legal practice or consider studying Law at University. The BTEC National Award in Applied Law will provide you with an insight into possible career options.
