HISTORY
WHY SHOULD I STUDY HISTORY?
History is an important and fascinating element within the International Diploma here at Prior Pursglove College. One of the main aims of studying History within the Diploma programme is to gain a greater insight into the origins and development of many of the issues affecting the world we live in today. Another aim is to prepare you for university level study and the demands of reading for an academic degree, such as History, Politics or Law.
USEFUL SKILLS & INTERESTS
The skills that you will develop as a student of History are transferable: interpretation of source materials, evaluation of competing viewpoints and analysis of information are all vital skills that are important for future graduates.
COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT
The Diploma Programme offers you the opportunity to study history either at standard level (SL) or higher level (HL). One of the main aims of the History programme within the Diploma is that it provides both structure and flexibility, fostering an understanding of major historical events in a global context. It is within this spirit that we have decided to offer a broad and international approach to studying History.
YEAR 1 (Standard level)
Peacemaking and Peacekeeping: International Relations, 1918-1936
Origins and development of authoritarian single-party states: (Standard level) Hitler’s Germany, Stalin’s Russia, Castro’s Cuba
Interwar years: conflict and cooperation, 1919-1939 (Higher level)
Germany 1919-1939; Italy 1919-1939; Spain 1936-1939
The Cold War, 1945-1991 (Standard level)
Coursework (may extend into Year 2 for both HL and SL students)
YEAR 2: (Higher level)
Imperial Russia, revolutions and the emergence the Soviet state, 1853-1924
The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, 1924-2000
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
External examinations take place at the end of second year, alongside your other examinations for the International Baccalaureate. Your final examination will be a mixture of source-based questions, essay writing together with a coursework assignment. During the course, you will develop those skills required to take these examinations and homework will be set and marked on a regular basis.
COURSE COMMITMENT
In order to gain the full International Baccalaureate Diploma, you must pass all six subject domains as well as the common core. You may wish to take History at either Higher or Standard Level. You should realise that studying History involves extensive reading outside the lesson and requires a great deal of note-taking and writing. Although hard work, History is fascinating and well worth the effort!
COURSE COSTS
Your textbooks will be provided by the College but you may wish to consider subscribing to one of the History magazines recommended by the College.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
You should meet the entry requirements described for a level 3 course. This is specified as 5 GCSEs at grade C or above.
PROGRESSION ROUTES
The International Baccalaureate is a highly valued and prestigious qualification that prepares you for University. It is particularly valued by leading Russell Group universities and Oxbridge. History is a demanding and rewarding course that is excellent preparation for the rigours of university study. History is also invaluable for those who wish to enter employment and serves those who wish to develop their interpersonal, managerial and organisational skills.
