Student Views

“The college has an excellent academic reputation and I would recommend it. You have the freedom to choose exactly which subject you want in the right combination. The social side is also very good.”

AS/A Archaeology

WHAT IS ARCHAEOLOGY?

It is the study of past human societies. This is done by looking at material remains, in other words, things people have left behind.

WHY SHOULD I STUDY ARCHAEOLOGY?

It combines aspects from science, art, technology, geography, history, sociology and religious studies, so it has something of interest for everyone!

USEFUL SKILLS & INTERESTS

Being able to critically evaluate texts and interpretations of archaeological sites. Ability to interpret maps and diagrams (although these skills will be taught on the course). An interest in the outdoors and in being observant would be an advantage.

COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT

At AS there are 2 modules, The Archaeology of Religion and Ritual and Archaeological Skills and Methods. At A2, the modules are World Archaeology and a Personal Study (research based coursework).

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

At AS, both modules are examined. At A2, World Archaeology is examined and the Personal Study is internally assessed by your teachers.

COURSE COMMITMENT

This is not an “easy” subject! You need to be willing to put in extra time outside of lessons for reading and research. Ideally, you would be interested in practical excavation work too, for which you must be physically fit and not mind getting dirty! However, no excavation experience is required for this A level.

COURSE COSTS

There may be opportunity to make site visits and to gain some excavating experience. This will be dependant on local availability and will incur transport costs.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

English and Science at GCSE grade C or above. A humanites subject at grade C or above would be an advantage. A willingness to work independently and to undertake a 3,500 –4,000 word piece of coursework for the Personal Study at A2.

PROGRESSION ROUTES

A degree in Archaeology, or Anthopology at University if you are interested in taking this fascinating subject further.  Archaeology degrees can take 2 forms…….the BSc which is for the student interested in the scientific approach, or the BA for the student more interested in the humanities aspect. But bear in mind, it is a good A Level to have to progress to any humanities degree, or even to compliment your science A levels to go on to a science degree. It is a very versatile choice to make!

FURTHER INFORMATION

This course would fit well with many A levels but particularly those in humanities subjects such as Classical Civilisation, Geography, Geology, History, or the sciences; Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Applied Science. GCSE Latin would also compliment it.
