Skills for Development students sow an autumn crop

Students in Skills for Development 1 have been in the greenhouse, carrying out some autumn sowing.

The work has given them experience for their ‘working safely’ unit. They worked carefully to sow overwintering broad beans, peas and perpetual spinach. Overwintering varieties are sown in autumn and grow on through the colder months, which can mean an earlier harvest the following year.

The group is hoping for an early crop to share with the college community.

Sessions like this link the students’ coursework to real, practical tasks, with care taken over each step and safety in mind throughout. Over the coming weeks, the group will be able to watch the results of their work come through.

Skills for Development is one of four Endeavour programmes. It builds confidence and workplace skills through Maths and English and vocational tasters, including hospitality, catering, retail, horticulture and woodwork, together with tutorials, work experience and volunteering opportunities. Work in the greenhouse gives students a feel for horticulture, one of those tasters.

Endeavour is our department for students aged 16 to 24 who need additional support and a more personalised approach to learning. Every student is recognised as an individual, with support and opportunities shaped around their strengths, aspirations and needs. Find out more about Endeavour.
