What is stress and burnout?
Pressure is part of life, especially at college. A small amount can actually help you focus and get things done. But when it tips into too much for too long, it can affect your mood, your relationships, your sleep and your ability to think clearly.
Burnout is what happens when stress runs on for too long without a break. It is that feeling of being completely drained, physically and emotionally.
What it can feel like:
- Difficulty breathing
- Sleep problems, headaches
- Racing thoughts
- Snapping at people
- Finding it hard to concentrate or make decisions
- Feeling overwhelmed by tasks that used to be manageable
What can help
Contact our Therapy Service at therapyservice@atomix.ac.uk for a drop-in or to arrange weekly sessions.
- Break big tasks down. If revision or coursework feels impossible, start with one small chunk. You do not have to do it all at once.
- Build in breaks. Balance is not a luxury. Schedule time for things you enjoy between study sessions.
- Spot your triggers. Start tracking when you feel most stressed and what is happening around those times. Awareness is the first step to managing it.
- Move. Exercise, walking, stretching. Physical movement burns off stress hormones.
- Talk. To friends, family, your tutor, or our counsellors. Stress thrives in silence.
